# Custom fields

{% hint style="info" %}
In this section, you will find insights on how to create and use custom fields in ActiveCampaign.
{% endhint %}

Creating custom fields in ActiveCampaign allows you to organize contact information and segment your audience for targeted[ marketing campaigns](/activecampaign-academy/getting-started/build-your-campaigns.md), which is especially useful for entrepreneurs and digital business owners.

Types of custom fields:

* Only text
* Text area
* Dropdown
* Radio
* Checkbox
* Date fields

{% hint style="success" %}
Each field type serves a specific purpose, so it's important to choose the one that best fits your needs.
{% endhint %}

When creating a custom field in ActiveCampaign, you'll need to name it, provide an optional description, and customize its details based on the field type, such as adding dropdown options or setting a date format.

Once created, you can decide where the field will appear, either on signup forms (making it required) or on contact profile pages (making it optional), enabling you to segment your audience for targeted marketing campaigns.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.wildmail.io/activecampaign-academy/exploring-further/organize-your-deals/custom-fields.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
